Smart Shearing Machine
Introduction
The Smart Shearing Machine project demonstrates the transformation of a traditional pedal-operated machine, used for cutting large sheet metal plates, into a smart machine. The goal is to improve the quality of cuts by ensuring the correct placement of the sheet, through the monitoring of three critical parameters: sheet width, marking offset, and sheet thickness.
Key Upgrades:
-
Sensor Integration: Proximity and distance sensors are strategically positioned to detect and measure the sheet’s width, marking offset, and thickness during placement, ensuring optimal cutting precision.
-
HMI Interlocks: The Human-Machine Interface (HMI) application includes interlocks that only release the pedal-blocking motor when the sheet is correctly positioned. This ensures that the machine operates safely and efficiently.
-
Motorized Stopper Assembly: A motorized stopper assembly at the back adjusts dynamically to match the marking offset, ensuring precise cuts with minimal operator intervention.
The system captures process parameters and energy characteristics for each cut and transmits this data through industrial communication protocols. This real-time monitoring provides greater visibility and control over the shearing process, resulting in higher-quality outputs and enhanced operator safety.
By modernizing the legacy shearing machine and integrating smart features, this project represents a significant advancement in smarter manufacturing practices, improving both accuracy and operational efficiency.
